About this experience
Come Explore Ketchikan Alaska with the locals.
First, Herring Cove this cove is home to many black bear. Not only do you have the chance to see black bear there are also eagle, harbor seal, and starting in June thousands of salmon running up the creek.
Next, over to a small beach for scenic views. Take a picture in front of a 600 year old Sitka Spruce tree. Plus during the salmon run you will see the fishermen out for the catch of the day.
Last, head even further out of town the Rainbow falls. This waterfall is a beautiful backdrop for photos. After a rain be prepared for water to spray out. if there hasn't been rain you can see the greenery and rocks behind the falls.
All tours are guided by local women. Water, Chips, small candy, and rain ponchos are all provided.
Wildlife not Guaranteed. This is not a hiking tour. Stops require the ability to take 30 steps. We make one waterfall stop.

Planning perspective
How I’d plan this experience
If you want a short outing beyond downtown Ketchikan that mixes wildlife-watch stops with a waterfall and coastal scenery, this two-hour tour is a practical fit. I’d choose it for the local perspective and varied stops, not as a guaranteed bear encounter: wildlife sightings are explicitly not guaranteed, and the route is designed for roadside viewing rather than hiking.
Choose it for variety, not a wildlife promise
The itinerary includes about 45 minutes at Herring Cove, described as the best chance to see wildlife such as bears, eagles, deer and salmon. A further stop is a small beach with a 600-year-old Sitka spruce, followed by Rainbow Falls. That gives you more than one reason to go, even if the animals stay out of sight.
Bear sightings are an uncertain bonus, not a sound basis for booking on their own. Traveller accounts include both successful sightings and tours without bears; my advice is to enjoy the scenery and local commentary as the main experience, and treat wildlife as a possibility.
A good match if you want easy-access stops
This is not a hike: the waterfall is right off the road, and the tour information says stops require the ability to take 30 steps. I’d consider it for a mixed-age group or anyone who prefers a scenic drive with brief stops over a trail-focused outing. The listing notes infants and small children can ride in a stroller, but infants must sit on an adult’s lap during the tour.
You’ll have one waterfall stop, not a series of falls. After rain, spray can reach you; in drier conditions, the greenery and rocks behind the falls may be more visible. Bring that weather-dependent contrast into your expectations.
Plan the pickup before you set off
The listed meeting point is the bronze statue by the Ketchikan Visitors Center at Berth 2. If your ship docks at Ward Cove, pickup is inside the brick building 30 minutes before departure; the listing asks Ward Cove passengers to specify whether they need that pickup or will be downtown. I’d settle that detail in advance rather than assume the downtown meeting point applies.
The tour is two hours, and water, snacks and rain ponchos are included. That’s useful for a compact outing, but I wouldn’t treat the provided poncho as a substitute for dressing for wet weather, especially near the falls.
Expect a shared tour, with a local-guide focus
This is a shared tour with a listed maximum of 41 travelers, so I wouldn’t book it expecting a private outing or guaranteed small-group feel. The recurring positive theme in the available feedback is the guides’ local knowledge and effort to look for wildlife. That can make the drive more engaging, but it can’t control whether animals appear.
If you value local context and several scenic stops more than a wildlife checklist, the trade-off makes sense. If seeing a bear is your single priority, I’d choose with caution.
